Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaker. Feminist Frequency provides videos, commentaries and analysis of the way in which popular culture portrays women. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer that has received prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are depicted in popular media. In her efforts to break down stereotypes of women that exist in pop culture, she also works with issues that relate to the gender-specific harassment of women as well as others on the internet. Sarkeesian has a degree in the fields of social thought and political science at York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public presenter. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen Festival as well as to the United Nations Broadband Working Group. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was fascinated by the issue of gender identity and women's rights at an early stage. The determined lady had planned to start a web-based series examining gender-based representations in video games and ended up being the victim of an online harassment campaign. However the attack could be a deterrent, but it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been awarded numerous prizes.
